Over 60% of cats in the U.S. are overweight or obese. Most owners don't recognize it. But cat obesity dramatically shortens lifespan.
How to assess body condition
Body condition score (BCS) on 1–9:
- 1–3: Underweight.
- 4–5: Ideal. Ribs palpable with light cover. Visible waist.
- 6: Slightly overweight.
- 7: Overweight.
- 8–9: Obese.
Most house cats are 6–7 — owners think this is "normal" but it's not ideal.
Visual checks
From above: healthy cat has visible waist tapering inward.
From the side: belly should tuck up slightly.
Hands-on: feel ribs with light pressure. Can't feel them = overweight.
Weight ranges by breed
| Breed | Healthy weight |
|---|---|
| Domestic Shorthair | 8–11 lbs |
| Maine Coon | 10–18 lbs |
| Siamese | 8–12 lbs |
| Persian | 8–12 lbs |
| British Shorthair | 9–17 lbs |
Health risks of obesity
- Diabetes (4× higher risk).
- Arthritis.
- Heart disease.
- Liver disease (especially during sudden food restriction — fatty liver).
- Skin issues (can't groom properly).
- Reduced lifespan by 1–3 years.
Why cats become overweight
- Free-feeding.
- Inactive indoor lifestyle.
- Spay/neuter (25–30% fewer calories needed).
- High-carb dry food.
- Multi-cat homes (cats stealing food).
- Treats and table scraps.
- Aging.
Safe weight loss for cats
Aim for 1–2% body weight loss per week. Cats need slow weight loss — faster can trigger fatty liver disease.
For 14-lb cat with 10-lb goal: 0.14–0.28 lbs/week. Total time: 14–28 weeks.
Step 1: Calculate target calories
Use ideal weight (not current) in the calculator.
Step 2: Switch to higher-quality food
Wet food often better for weight loss: lower calorie density, higher protein, lower carbs, better hydration.
Step 3: Schedule meals
Stop free-feeding. 2–3 measured meals per day. Use puzzle feeders.
Step 4: Increase activity
Cat exercise is play, not walks:
- Wand toys 10–15 min × 2 daily.
- Cat trees and climbing structures.
- Window perches.
- Puzzle feeders.
Step 5: Monitor weight weekly
Weigh at home: weigh yourself, hold cat and weigh both, subtract. If not losing, reduce calories another 5–10%.
Vet involvement
Get vet's blessing first. Verify no underlying medical issue (hyperthyroidism, diabetes). Set baseline. Schedule monthly weigh-ins.
Multi-cat households
Hardest scenario. Solutions: microchip-activated feeders, separate rooms during meals, scheduled meals.
Avoiding the "starving cat" cry
- Multiple smaller meals (3+ daily).
- Slow feeders.
- Higher protein for fullness.
- Some treat allowance.
- Resist begging.
The reward
Once at ideal weight: more energetic, easier movement, 1–3 years longer life, lower vet bills.
Calculate portions
Our cat food portion calculator handles the calculations. Enter ideal weight (not current) for the right calorie target.
