Area conversion is where unit problems get square. Square feet don't convert to square meters the same way feet convert to meters — you have to square the length factor. And then there are acres, hectares, square miles, and square kilometers layered on top. Here's how to navigate it cleanly.

The core conversions

  • 1 square foot = 0.0929 square meters (because (0.3048)² = 0.0929)
  • 1 square meter = 10.76 square feet
  • 1 square yard = 0.836 square meters = 9 square feet
  • 1 square mile = 2.590 square kilometers
  • 1 square kilometer = 0.386 square miles

Why you square the factor

1 foot = 0.3048 meters. A 1 foot × 1 foot square is 1 sq ft in imperial. The same square is 0.3048 m × 0.3048 m = 0.0929 sq m in metric. So: 1 sq ft = 0.0929 sq m (length factor squared).

This catches people out all the time. A 1,000 sq ft apartment is not 304.8 sq m — it's 92.9 sq m.

Real estate quick conversions

  • 500 sq ft = 46 sq m (small studio)
  • 750 sq ft = 70 sq m (1-bedroom apartment)
  • 1,000 sq ft = 93 sq m (2-bedroom apartment)
  • 1,500 sq ft = 139 sq m (starter home)
  • 2,000 sq ft = 186 sq m (mid-size US home)
  • 3,000 sq ft = 279 sq m (large US home)

American homes are generally much larger than European homes. A "spacious" 1-bedroom in Europe might be 60 sq m; in the US, 90+ sq m is typical. Knowing the conversion helps interpret listings abroad.

Acres and hectares

Both are land-area units, not building-area units.

  • 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft
  • 1 acre ≈ 4,047 sq m (0.4047 hectares)
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 sq m (2.471 acres)

An acre is about the size of a football field without the end zones (or close to 1 US football field with end zones, depending on how you measure). A hectare is about 2.5 football fields.

Real-life scale:

  • A standard suburban US lot: 0.25 acres (10,890 sq ft)
  • Central Park, NYC: 843 acres = 341 hectares
  • Vatican City: 44 hectares = 109 acres
  • Manhattan island: 33.6 km² = 8,300 acres

Quick mental math

sq ft to sq m: divide by 10 and slightly more (10.76). Or: multiply by 0.093.

  • 1,500 sq ft ÷ 10.76 ≈ 139 sq m. Rough: 1,500 / 10 = 150 sq m (6–7% high).

sq m to sq ft: multiply by 10.76. Or: multiply by 10 and add 8%.

  • 100 sq m × 10.76 ≈ 1,076 sq ft. Rough: 100 × 10 + 8% = 1,080. ✓

Acres to hectares: divide by 2.5 (rough) or by 2.471 (exact).

Hectares to acres: multiply by 2.5 (rough) or by 2.471 (exact).

Square miles and square kilometers

Used for large regions: countries, states, continents.

  • US state of Rhode Island: 1,214 sq mi = 3,144 sq km
  • US state of Texas: 268,596 sq mi = 695,662 sq km
  • United States: 3.8 million sq mi = 9.8 million sq km
  • France: 247,000 sq mi = 640,000 sq km

A square mile is roughly 2.6 square kilometers. A square kilometer is roughly 0.39 square miles. Which is why the US feels much bigger than its raw number suggests when converting to metric — it's nearly 10 million square kilometers.

Paint and flooring

A gallon of paint typically covers 350 sq ft. A box of tile covers 10–20 sq ft depending on tile size. Home projects almost always get planned in sq ft in the US. Home improvement calculators usually expect sq ft input.

Carpet is often priced per square yard: 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft. A 12 ft × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft = 20 sq yards.

International lot sizes

When buying property abroad:

  • UK: often in sq ft for interior, acres for land
  • Australia: square meters indoors, hectares for rural land
  • France: always square meters
  • Japan: square meters, or tsubo (1 tsubo = 3.31 sq m, a traditional unit)
  • Brazil: square meters, or hectares for rural

Compute instantly

Our area converter handles square feet, square meters, square yards, acres, hectares, square miles, and square kilometers in any combination. Enter one value and see all the others. Use it for real estate, land purchases, project planning, or international comparison. Area conversion has traps — squaring the length factor, mixing up acres with hectares — that a good tool eliminates entirely.
